BY MARIA GARRIDO - 2 MINUTE READ

Clear mental clutter and embrace discomfort so you can lead an extraordinary life in the New Year.

THE STATE OF AFFAIRS

These past few years have been difficult for people. The world seems to be unravelling: wars, widespread injustice, political struggles, economic uncertainty, global health crisis, the precarious state of natural the environment.... Many people are ridden with anxiety and levels of depression are on the rise.

In an unpredictable world, it's hard to stay optimistic about the future. Anchoring ourselves to hope helps us navigate uncertainty and approach challenges with a positive mindset, fostering resilience and determination to overcome obstacles.

You may not have the power to save the world but you can make a conscious effort to remain hopeful and set intentions in the new year that contribute to caring for yourself, for others and for the planet in ways that speak to you.

DEFINING EXTRAORDINARY

The meaning of an extraordinary life is deeply personal, as what may be extraordinary for one person might not be the same for another. However, no matter who you are or who you strive to become, an extraordinary life is not defined by riches, power, and socially acceptable success. In fact, it's probably very little of these and much more about the relationships we cultivate and living a life that is aligned to our true selves.

When we prioritize meaningful connections with friends, family, and the community, we find a more fulfilling life. When we align our actions with our values, we magically open that portal of opportunities toward the extraordinary.

If we set an intention to care for ourselves in the year ahead and we want to welcome the extraordinary into our lives, some of us will need to hit the reset button. We cannot be bound for an extraordinary year if we don't start with a clean slate. It is only when we've cleared the static in our lives that we can focus on fostering an environment that leaves sufficient space for the extraordinary to stroll right in.

DECLUTTER FIRST

Declutter your life in 2024. This means removing obstacles and distractions that will cloud your view; this includes people, things and situations that don't serve you or bring you joy. After all, you wouldn't serve a three star dinner on a dirty plate, so a little sprucing up of your environment is needed if you want to invite in the extraordinary.

You don't have to be rude and start ghosting people but you can focus on the positive people in your life. Surround yourself more with those who stimulate and inspire you, the people who recharge your energy, not take it away. If there are people in your life who drain you, it's your soul telling you to let them go. So if you're feeling extra brave, break up with the drainers.

If you often find yourself in situations that leave you emotionally exhausted or doing things you really don't like, make a plan to eliminate these from your life. If this step seems insurmountable, then start first by acknowledging the environments that make you uncomfortable. For example, if you're someone who feels obliged to attend the weekly afterwork happy hour when you'd rather be at the gym or at home decompressing from the long day, there is no unspoken rule that says you have to live misaligned with yourself. Listen to your own needs and make a plan in 2024 to skip the invites.

GET COMFORTABLE WITH DISCOMFORT

Once you've removed the grime from the gem that is your life, it's time to polish it. This requires a commitment to curiosity for the sake of growth. The journey to an extraordinary year is impossible without growth and this only comes when you're open to change. Instead of fearing the unknown, view it as an opportunity for self-discovery. This isn't just about adapting well to change when you stumble upon it in your path. Agility in the face of unexpected change is a great skill to have but if you want an extraordinary life, I challenge you to take this one step further: seek out new experiences and step, however messily, out of your comfort zone.

It is in the unfamiliar that you often find the most profound experiences; it's where you grow. When you push yourself beyond your usual boundaries, you may discover talents, skills, or passions that were previously unknown. Deep down inside, you know what experiences or activities you're deeply curious about. So, this coming year, set an intention to try at least one of these. Once you dive in, you'll start to see what extraordinary looks like.

Of course, not all new experiences will be pleasant, but if you cultivate a positive mindset this new year, you'll even see the message in the messy adventures and quickly identify when you're headed toward a dead end so you can switch directions without breaking your stride. You'll take comfort in knowing that facing the unfamiliar and overcoming challenges builds courage so it was still worth it.
